Skagway
Day 6 18th
June and what is the day ……..
Oh yes Wednesday,
thanks elevator for reminding me!! But
to be honest it doesn’t mean a thing as we just move from one adventure to
another at the moment no routine predicts what day it is anymore!! We used to know what day it was with school,
work and clubs but nowadays it is how many days have we here and when are we
next moving on!! I do like getting the
day though in the morning when I head up onto deck to catch the photos of us
coming into port or when I head up for the coffee, hot water and cold water!
At
least we see some blue skies today!
View
out the front of the ship, we have reversed in well I say we but the Captain is
doing a fine job I wouldn’t want to interfere ha ha!!
There
are a few paintings on the side of the cliff face, just not sure if I like it
or not as it makes the cliff face look a bit scruffy!
Here is the port and
we have reversed so we are bumper to bumper with another cruise ship so there
are 4 cruise ships in port this morning, wowee the town won’t know what has hit
them but I’m sure they are used to it just like we were in Bermuda during the
week when we used to have 6 cruise ships descend on our shores. The trains are parked on the port ready to
take people up the White Pass, so the story behind Skagway and its history with
the gold rush ……..
No gold was ever found in Skagway River valley
but people flocked to the town in 1898.
The gold seekers had to trek 35 miles through the mountains to the lakes
where they began a 550 mile boat trip to reach the gold fields near the
junction of Klondike and Yukon Rivers.
The famous White Pass train goes through the mountains and shows the
original trail worn into the rock made by the gold seekers. Forecast was for 13 degrees C and this has
been really strange in Alaska as the sunrise was at 3.43am and sunset will be
at 10.22pm. Even after the sunset it
doesn’t really go dark so when you wake in the night you have no idea if it is
morning or middle of the night, been really strange!!
Here are all four of
us parked up
I think that is where
we are heading when we get off the ship, the town is about 1 mile away
Not
been that many opportunities with setting the camera up so here we are with
Skagway and the White Pass mountains behind us but we had to do one with all of
us modelling our new Alaska t-shirts we got in Juneau!! Oooh sir, suit you sir!!!
And
of course the funny pose!!
Even
though it is supposed to be 13 degrees C and maybe climbing up to 17 we still
wrap up warm as there still is a nip in the air!
Here
we are again a different animal each morning just so you buy their photographs
but I got caught taking the photo this time and it was ‘Please mam put the
camera away’ okay I will after I have got the shot hee hee!!
Off
the ship and to be back on board by 4pm, I’m sure we will be don’t you worry
The
Coral Princess in front of us is registered in Hamilton, Bermuda, strange we
were only just talking about Bermuda!!
Amy says it feels
funny to have her shades on and her hat but boy we need the hat as it is chilly
and the shades because it is sunny!!
The
girls with the same attire hats and shades!!
Colin is tough and doesn’t have his hat on but he has the shades
Bo) He couldn’t be part our gang for
this photo though ha ha!!
The Anderson gang are divided on opinions with the paintings on the cliff. Colin
likes the cliff face but now I am closer to it, it is a definite no, it is
tatty in my eyes with all the painting ruining the beautiful cliff face, sorry
whoever painted it, me no likey!! Amy says it is okay!!
Walking
up the pier
Oh
really have we parked in the wrong place Captain oh no there is a small marina
next to us ha ha!!
Here
is the marina and don’t the little yachts and sail boats look tiny compared to
the NCL cruise ships behind them!
Why
thank you and thanks for the sun today too!
Gosh
it is mid-June and the Iris flowers are just coming out now, wow!!!
Off
we go on our little jaunt into town
Don’t look now Amy
but there is a bear on top of your head and behind you, your surrounded!!!
You
look like a minion with your mining hat on!
There
is a moose loose aboot this hoose!!
Pretty
cool oldy worldy Tourist Information, they reckon this is a cowboy town
With
all the decking as the pavements it certainly feels authentic that is for sure!
Look at this beautiful Husky dog waiting for
his owner outside a café
Messing
about with the 4th July celebration things as we have still been on
the search for a USA flag for Amy’s suitcase but my we found loads here…….
another
deisgn …….
yet
another design of hat and ………….
Oh
yeah His and Hers with a big bow too, wow they know how to celebrate 4th
July in style!!!
But NO sticker!! We will get one don't you worry Amy!
Alaska
has loads of popcorn shops but we hadn’t tried any until now as we got free
samples!! Amy liked the Buttered Popcorn
but didn’t like the Kettle but I wasn’t sure what flavour that was, I didn’t
try the Jalapeno or the Garlic and Parmesan Cheese flavours, they just sounded
wrong!!
In
town looking at a few shops
Look
what we have stumbled across a playpark!!!
And
some swings!!!
Woooohoooo
these swings are cool!!
What
a backdrop at the park!!!
The
race is on!!!!!
The
girls are racing too!!!!
Skagway
Church
That looks a good shop, let’s go in!!
Mmmmmmm we have found
a chocolatier and fudge shop so we buy some Turtle and Otter Paws, chocolate,
caramel and cashew nuts and Amy has chocolate and peanuts and ..............
chocolate
flavoured Gummy Bears, Amy said they were lovely but that sounded very wrong to
me so I didn’t even try them!!
Shops and stunning
snow-capped mountains as a backdrop!
So I am not feeling
so well today, tired and feeling yuck but I soon start to think about what I
had different the day before and say to Colin I wonder what the beer we have
had was made from so we pop into a liquor store and guess what the beer I had
at The Office in Icy Strait Point and the Alaskan Amber that I had at Red Dog
Saloon in Juneau are both wheat based, bleurgh I wouldn’t have had them if I
had known. The girl says there is one
gluten free beer available in Alaska which you can buy oh no thanks I will stay
away from Alaskan Beers thank you very much!!!
By the afternoon I had got rid of my sluggish yuck feeling and was back
to my usual self, phew!!!
This
was a poem that was in a trinket for each name, this was Amy’s that is so true xxx
My
poem and there wasn’t a Colin, poor Colly!!!
Bear
claws and ears, cute but sorry Amy baggage doesn’t allow those sorts of
things!!
White
Pass railway carriages in the background and main shopping street
Facing
the other way with the cruise ship and the White Pass railway just leaving
behind us!
Copying the statues
ha ha!!! These were men that went in
search of the gold fields back in the 1898
White Pass Railway carriages
The
White pass railway carriages just departing.
The train journey took 4 hours there and back and one of the highlights
of Skagway. The train journey is supposed
to be the most beautiful rail journey in the world but we decided not to take
it as we are taking the train from Seward to Anchorage through the Rockies in a
couple of days, exciting!!
Walking
back to the ship through a lake and wood area
Was trying to be
artistic with the Iris flowers and the beautiful backdrop but it was too sunny
to see what photo I had taken on the screen of my camera, but I think I did
okay?!
All
these fish restaurants are just wasted on us, all freshly caught and cooked on the same
day!
The Coral Princess
ship and the top silver funnel Colin thinks looks like Gru’s car from
Despicable Me hee hee!!
Nearly
at our ship and the wind down this quay is just bitter!!
Nice
bottom, twit two
Sticker
task complete xxx
Okay
so we all got new goggles in Orlando so we thought we would try swimming
in the Solarium on the Radiance of the Seas this time, fingers crossed the same fiasco doesn’t happen with Colin’s
eyes this time!
Goggles
worked perfect but the taste of salty chemical water is gross not that we went
in to drink the water you taste it on your lips, yuck so we head out to try the
kid’s slide ……
Slide
closed and only open on sea days but Amy has a dip in the baby pool
Then we head to the
main outdoor heated pool, it is warmer than the solarium indoor pool!! Colin and Amy swimming away but the taste is
the same as the solarium pool so a couple of lengths and we were done!
We
headed to the Centrum Lobby bar for a drink and a game of Pass the Pigs and
this was a view we could see from our sofa
Poser!!
We headed for dinner
and the Head Waiter made Amy a chicken, mmmm not up to Iputu’s standards of his
origami from Legend of the Seas
Just
hanging around like a monkey does!!
We went to the City of Dreams show that was the Royal Caribbean dancers and singers performance, they were dancing with different backdrops and different costumes for each city they did Venice, Beijing and a few other we weren’t sure of. Amy absolutely loved the show, it was okay for us
At the end of the show streamers came flying
on top of us from the ceiling. Amy
collected some for her and Yorkie to play with in the room, funny how Yorkie is
brought into the scenario as if she is real ha ha!!!
We are all starting
to really enjoy Radiance of the Seas and Alaska maybe just took us a little
while to settle into a slower pace of life.
I think because we only sailed on the Legend of the Seas last month we
were comparing the two ships whereas normally you have a year or two in between
cruises so you have forgotten a lot to do with the ship but our memories are
still fresh!
That is us all done all
the ports now, tomorrow is Hubbard Glacier that we sail past. We are all really looking forward to that as
we loved seeing Mendenhall Glacier so would be nice to see one from a different
view point!! We are supposed to be there
about 8.30am but all week they have been getting their timings knocked off so I
think it will be earlier than that!!
